THREE SAFE AFTER ENGINE ROOM FIRE THREATENS BOAT SEATTLE - Three people are safe after battling an early morning fire on an 80-foot commercial fishing boat, with the assistance of the Coast Guard, approximately 36 miles west of Air Station Astoria launched an HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and Coast Guard Station Cape Disappointment, Wash., launched a 47-foot motor lifeboat to assist. The helicopter arrived at the Anita Sue’s location and dropped a hand-held VHF radio to a crewmember because the disabled vessel’s radio was inoperable. The master of the Anita Sue used the hand-held radio to report that the fire had been extinguished and his vessel was in need of a tow. The motor lifeboat took the vessel in tow and headed for Warrenton, There has been no injuries or pollution reported. The Coast Guard reminds boaters to carry a VHF FM marine radio, which is the best way to contact the Coast Guard in the event of an emergency. Boaters should also ensure they have unexpired flares and fire extinguishers onboard.
