ASTORIA, Ore. — The Coast Guard medically evacuated a woman from the rocks at Bastendorff Beach near Charleston, Ore., Tuesday.

Coast Guard Air Station North Bend, Ore., was contacted by the Charleston Fire Department after the woman was struck by a wave while walking along the rocks.  An HH-65C Dolphin helicopter crew was dispatched to the scene to assist the fire department with the rescue of the woman who had injured her ankle.  After an emergency medical technician and basket were lowered to the woman, she was hoisted into the helicopter and delivered to Bay Area Hospital in Coos Bay, Ore., for treatment.

The Coast Guard reminds beachgoers to stay aware of their surroundings, be cautious around rocks and to stay off of jetties.  Sneaker waves and heavy debris can quickly wash up onto shore striking people unawares, injuring them or dragging them out to sea.
