UPDATE 2- UNIFIED COMMAND CONCLUDES MERCURY CLEANUP

OPERATIONS IN FLORENCE, ORE.

FLORENCE, Ore. –  The Unified Command, led by the Coast Guard, the Department of Environmental Quality, and Siuslaw Valley Fire Department, concluded response and cleanup efforts of mercury, Tuesday afternoon.

A coordinated response, which included ten federal, state, and local agencies, began Monday morning after an undetermined amount of mercury was discovered on the beach Sunday, by a citizen walking nearby.

The area, approximately 12-feet in diameter, had been isolated and cordoned off at the beginning of the response. The one-mile stretch of beach was reopened today after cleanup efforts were completed.

During the cleanup process 20 milliliters of mercury was removed from the beach.

No further mercury was detected today during sampling efforts conducted by the Coast Guard and the Department of Environmental Quality.

The source of the mercury is still unknown.

Members of the public having any information regarding the source are encouraged to call the Lane County Sheriff’s office at (541) 682-4141.
