UNDETERMINED AMOUNT OF MERCURY DISCOVERED NEAR SIUSLAW RIVER SEATTLE - An undetermined amount of mercury was discovered Sunday on a beach about a quarter mile north of the Siuslaw River north jetty.
The affected area is estimated to cover approximately three-feet by eleven-feet.
The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and Coast Guard Sector Portland, Ore., contracted a hazardous material team to conduct a survey of the area and test the mercury.
The source of the mercury is currently under investigation.
Cleanup efforts are ongoing and are being directed by the Unified Command, which consists of personnel from Coast Guard Sector Portland, the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, the Department of Interior, the Department of Environmental Quality, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Response Center and local first responders.
