FISHING VESSEL SINKS AT DOCK IN BROOKINGS, ORE. SEATTLE - The U.S. Coast Guard is monitoring the cleanup of a fishing vessel that sank at 2 a.m., this morning at a marina in Brookings, Ore. At 3 a.m., Coast Guard Sector Portland received a report from Coast Guard Station Chetco River, Ore., of a minor oil sheen originating from a fishing vessel which sank at a marina in Brookings. Station Chetco River launched a mobile land unit and placed boom around the vessel at about 3 a.m., to contain and absorb any oil in the water. The 33-foot wooden vessel Cyanna Lei is estimated to have about 25 gallons of diesel and about 10 gallons of hydraulic fluid onboard. Ten gallons of diesel and hydraulic fluid is estimated to have leaked from the vessel. The vessel is still partially submerged. The Coast Guard has hired a private contractor to remove the remaining fuel onboard. Divers plan to plug the vents on the vessel’s fuel tanks to prevent further pollution. The cause of the sinking is under investigation.
