COAST GUARD RESCUES TWO SURFERS NEAR CANNON BEACH, ORE.

SEATTLE -  The Coast Guard rescued two men today near Cannon Beach, Ore. after they became stranded off shore while surfing.

An HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Astoria and  a 47-foot motor lifeboat from Station Tillamook Bay were launched about noon after a citizen at Ecola State Beach reported that the men were in distress.

A Cannon Beach Fire Department beach rescue team also responded, but were unable to reach the men from shore due to 10-foot swells, 22-knot  winds and strong rip currents.

The Jayhawk helicopter crew hoisted one of the men from the 52-degree water and the second man from a nearby rock formation about 12:20 p.m.

The two men were transported to Air Station Astoria, where awaiting emergency medical technicians treated and released the men.
