COAST GUARD FLIES 200 MILES TO MEDEVAC WOMAN FROM CRUISE SHIP

SEATTLE - The Coast Guard conducted a long distance medevac of an 81-year old woman from a cruise ship Thursday, 200 miles west of Astoria, Ore.

The captain of the Carnival Spirit notified the Coast Guard that the woman had fallen and required immediate medical attention due to multiple injuries.

The Thirteenth Coast Guard District Rescue Coordination Center in Seattle directed the vessel to sail to a point 200 miles west of Astoria at 4 p.m.

An HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Group/Air Station Astoria was launched to assist.

A C-130 Hercules aircraft from Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento, Calif., was launched to provide communication cover for the medevac.

At 7 p.m., Monday evening, the Jayhawk reached the Carnival Spirit and safely hoisted the injured woman aboard. The woman was conscious and in good condition at the time of the hoist. The helicopter flew to Air Station Astoria, where awaiting emergency medical personnel transported her to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria for further treatment.

Weather conditions at the time of the medevac were seas of 8-feet and winds of 35 mph.
