Port Restoration Expert to Speak in Seattle

SEATTLE - Professor Hector H. Guerrero, an expert on port restoration, will lecture key Coast Guard, regional maritime leaders and the media on Monday at Seattle’s Pier 36, from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m.

Guerrero is in Seattle to participate in the Marine Terrorism Response Exercise and is a leader in how to put ports back into operation after they become victims of major transportation security incidents or natural disasters.  Guerrero, as part of Operation Restore, seeks to minimize the economic impact of a port closure, such as Seattle’s, in the wake of any disaster.

The USCG Integrated Support Command is located along the waterfront at Pier 36, two blocks west of Safeco Field. The address is: 1519 Alaskan Way South, Bldg. 7.  The meeting will be held in the Chinook Room on the second floor.

Dr. Guerrero is an associate professor and former Director of the MBA program at the College of William and Mary, School of Business in Williamsburg, Virginia.  He teaches in the area manufacturing planning and control, statistics, information systems, general management, and business quantitative methods.  He has previously taught at the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, and the College of Business of the University of Notre Dame.   He has also been a Visiting Professor at the Instituto Latino-Americano de Estudios Sociales in Santiago Chile.

Professionally he is active in the areas of Operations Management and Information Systems.  He has published scholarly articles on the topics of logistics, material requirements planning, automated manufacturing, group technology, intelligent systems, forecasting, supply chain management, and demand management.  Currently he is doing research on RFID and vessel routing under catastrophic events. 

Prior to entering academe, he worked as a power plant engineer for Dow Chemical Company, as a design and reliability engineer for Lockheed Missiles and Space Co., and as a consultant to Economic and Engineering Services, Inc.

Professor Guerrero has experience in consulting and executive education with a wide variety of clients-- U.S. Government, Latin American firms, as well as many small and large U.S. manufacturing and service firms.  His consulting spans such diverse industries as high technology aeronautics to the quick service restaurant industry.  Some of his clients include-- IBM, Newport News Shipbuilding, Northrop Grumman, Arthur Andersen, Miles Laboratories, Sterling Drugs, Lockheed, Digital Equipment, Welsh Oil, Trout Trading Co., Müller Martini Manufacturing Corp., U.S. Department of Labor, Virginia Dept. of Planning and Budget, U.S. Department of Justice, Transportation Security Administration, High Technology Corporation, Excel Corporation, EarthScope, IRIS, to name a few.
