CHARTER BOAT CAPSIZES SOUTH OF UMPQUA RIVER, ORE.
WINCHESTER BAY, Ore. - The Coast Guard rescued two people from the
frigid waters just south of the Umpqua River Jetty after the
38-foot charter fishing vessel Sydney Mae II overturned this evening.
At approximately 8:40 p.m., Monday evening Coast Guard Station Umpqua
River, received a call from an onshore observer who
reported a charter fishing vessel was in distrss and that they
had lost sight of the charter vessel just south of the Umpqua
River Jetty.
Coast Guard Station Umpqua River launched two 47 foot motor lifeboats
and an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Sector-Air Station North Bend,
Ore. was also launched to assist. The helicopter had to return back to
North Bend after forty-five minutes of searching because the weather
had deteriorated to zero visibility because of dense fog.
At 9:13 p.m. a 47-foot motor life boat recovered two people from the 53-degree water.
The Sydney Mae II was carrying five passengers at the time of the
accident. One passenger has been found on the shoreline two miles south
of the river jetty, deceased. Two 47-foot motor life boats remain on
scene to continue searching for the remaining passengers.
