NEW RADIO EQUIPMENT IMPROVES BOATER SAFETY The Coast Guard and Oregon State Marine Board have installed a travelers information radio system in Newport Immediate plans to install an identical system at Garibladi, This system is designed to be an excellent resource for all boaters and improve the flow of life saving information. It has historically been difficult for the Coast Guard to provide boaters a reliable source for bar restriction information. In the past boaters have had a difficult time getting through to the recorded phone messages and have resorted to using the VHF Marine Radio to call Coast Guard stations to ask for bar reports. During busy times of the season these calls can overwhelm Coast Guard radio operators. This new system will give boaters immediate access to the information, while allowing Coast Guard watch standers to focus on operations. The new radio broadcast messages will be in addition to the recorded telephone messages. Coast Guard and Oregon State Marine Board representatives will be available on Friday, September 16, at 10:30 a.m., at
