TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT COAST GUARD'S WWII SERVICE REPRESENTATIVES SEATTLE - The Coast Guard’s rich World War II history will be recognized during the The Coast Guard’s service representatives are Maurice Poulin of Poulin enlisted into the Coast Guard in November 1941 and retired as Master Chief Petty Officer in August 1966. He served on the U.S.S. Leonard Wood from April 1942 to June 1945 and participated in nine invasions from the The Leonard Wood, a converted attack transport, routinely provided gunfire support while also rescuing survivors from the torpedoed sister ships during transports. A war romance, George V. Stauffer met his wife Betty while both were serving in the Coast Guard. George served on multiple ships in the Pacific theater and also served in Betty served as a Coast Guard SPAR during the war in the Pacific theater. Some 10,000 women joined the Coast Guard auxiliary between 1942 and 1946. Like its sister services, the Coast Guard created a women's reserve in the early 1940s, the SPAR’s, to free up men for overseas combat duty.
