CHARTER VESSEL CREW FIGHTS ENGINE FIRE NEAR LEEDS ISLAND, ORE.

SEATTLE- Five people who were on a 26-foot charter vessel are safe after battling an engine compartment fire near Leeds Island, Ore., Sunday.

The master of a Sully’s Guide Service boat contacted Coast Guard Station Umpqua River, Ore., by cell phone at 3:49 p.m. to report his engine compartment was on fire.

Station Umpqua River launched a 25-foot response boat and a mobile land unit to assist.  A nearby recreational boater was able to transport all four passengers safely to Unger's Landing Boat Ramp in Reedsport, Ore.

The master of the Sully’s Guide Service boat stayed aboard his vessel and was able to put out the fire with a fire hand-held extinguisher.  He then used a trolling motor to navigate the vessel to Unger's Landing Boat Ramp.

Boaters should ensure their vessels have all necessary safety equipment required by law for their size and type of vessel.  Proper safety equipment can greatly improve chances of survival during a maritime accident.
