News Release: Coast Guard responds to vessel explosion in Portland, Ore.

ASTORIA, Ore. — The Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary responded when a 32-foot recreational vessel exploded at a fueling pier on the Columbia River in Portland, Ore., Friday.

Sector Portland received a 911 dispatch call at 9:10 a.m. reporting a vessel was on fire with three people in the water at Donaldson’s Marina.

Station Portland diverted a 25-foot response boat crew, which arrived on scene at approximately 9:30 a.m. to find three good Samaritans had rescued the people in the water.

The 25-foot response boat crew and the Auxiliary boat crew secured the scene, cleared up debris and called an incident management team to assess any pollution caused by the explosion.

The Portland Fire Department provided emergency medical assistance and all three people were taken to a local hospital for further assessment.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
