News Release: Coast Guard announces change to the Umpqua River, Ore., Regulated Navigation Area

SEATTLE — The Coast Guard has made the decision to move the upriver line of the Umpqua River Regulated Navigation Area from aid number 8 back to its previous location at aid number 6, ensuring unfettered recreational usage of the Half Moon Bay and Windy Bay, Ore., areas.

This decision was made after Coast Guard officials were made aware of the possible negative economic impacts that restricting this area of the channel could have on the local economy.  The Coast Guard believes this change will have minimal affect on safety, and will allow better access to high use fishing areas.

While safety is always the first priority, the Coast Guard understands the impact the December 2009 regulation could have on the local economy, and appreciates the local residents and businesses bringing this concern to its attention.  The Coast Guard has initiated the process to make this change final, which it expects will take approximately 14 days.

All comments and questions should be directed to Lt. Kion Evans of Coast Guard District 13, Seattle, at 206-220-7232.
