Aside from the Gold and Silver Life-Saving Medals, the Coast Guard Distinguished Public Service Award is the highest public recognition that the Commandant of the Coast Guard may award. Distinguished Public Service Awards are given to recognize extraordinary heroism in advancing the Coast Guard's mission, exceptional coordination and/or cooperation in matters pertaining to the Coast Guard's responsibilities, or personal and direct contribution to the Coast Guard that had a direct bearing on the accomplishment of the Coast Guard's responsibilities to its citizens. SEATTLE — Adm.Thad W. Allen, Commandant of the Coast Guard, presented a Distinguished Public Service Award to Frederick Herzberg, Capt. USCG Ret., at the Coast Guard base here Thursday.
Herzberg was recognized for his performance while working in the Coast Guard Historian's Office. He launched The Foundation for Coast Guard History, which marked its 10th anniversary on Aug. 4, 2009.
Herzberg captured the personal stories and anecdotes regarding some of the most seminal events in Coast Guard history ensuring they would be available for future generations to learn from and treasure.
Herzberg served as Vice Chairman and Executive Director of the Foundation for the first eight years of its existence, handling tasks currently performed by three foundation volunteers.
The Foundation for Coast Guard History is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote the recognition and prestige of the U.S. Coast Guard by emphasizing its illustrious past and contribution to the nation.
