Crew of Coast Guard Cutter Orcas returns to Coos Bay, Ore.

ASTORIA, Ore. — The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Orcas is scheduled to return to Coos, Bay, Ore. Thursday.

The Orcas crew completed a 3,000 nautical mile deployment that took them through the Panama Canal and ended at the Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore.

The Orcas was transported to the Coast Guard Yard to undergo midlife repairs.  The Coast Guard Yard is a ship building and major repair facility and an essential part of the Coast Guard's core industrial base and fleet support operations.

The Orcas is a 110-foot cutter that has been stationed in Coos Bay since 1989 when it replaced the Cutter Pulaski. The Orcas is the twenty-seventh Island-Class cutter to join the fleet, and the sixth Coast Guard cutter to be stationed in Coos Bay since 1935.  The cutter's name is derived from Orcas Island, the largest of the San Juan Islands in Puget Sound, Wash.
