Coast Guard rescues kayaker near Bellingham, Wash. |
|
|
SEATTLE — The Coast Guard rescued an 80-year old man near Bellingham, Wash., Thursday. At approximately 3:30 p.m. Coast Guard Station Bellingham received a call from Whatcom County 911 dispatch relaying a good Samaritan report of a kayaker in distress near the I & J Waterway. Station Bellingham launched a response boat crew at 3:39 p.m and found an 80-year old, La Conner, Wash., man in the water clinging to his kayak. The response crew took the man back to Station Bellingham where Whatcom County Emergency Medical Services evaluated the kayaker's condition. The kayaker was medically cleared by Whatcom County EMS. The kayaker did not have a life-jacket on when the rescue boat crew arrived on scene. "Kayaks can be just as hazardous as any other personal watercraft and deserve just as much attention to protective equipment such as life-jackets," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Morgan Knight of Station Bellingham.
