Coast Guard responds to boat collision near Tacoma, Wash.

SEATTLE — The Coast Guard responded to a collision between two small boats in the Sitcum Waterway near Tacoma, Wash., Monday.

At approximately 4 p.m., Monday, a small response boat crew, from Coast Guard Station Seattle, lent assistance after the crew observed two boats collide.

A passenger from one of the boats was briefly knocked unconscious and was transferred by the Coast Guard response boat to a Tacoma Fire department boat. The passenger was taken to a waiting Tacoma EMS team for transport to St. Joseph's Hospital.

The four other passengers involved in the collision were reported to have minor injuries.

The cause of the collision is unknown at this time.

The Tacoma Police Department is investigating the collision.

"The Coast Guard encourages boaters to exercise caution and safe transit speeds when transiting through heavily trafficked waterways," said Lt. John Hanley, the assitant chief of Sector Seattle Command Center.
