Coast Guard hoists fisherman 57 miles offshore

ASTORIA, Ore. — A Coast Guard rescue helicopter crew hoisted a 30-year-old man from a boat approximately 57 miles west of Lincoln City, Ore., Monday.

Coast Guard Group/Air Station North Bend, Ore., received a request for assistance at 9:35 a.m. for a fisherman aboard the 50-foot fishing vessel Karen Jan who was having trouble breathing.

A rescue helicopter crew from Air Facility Newport, Ore., was dispatched to assist.

The fisherman was hoisted aboard the rescue helicopter and transported to Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport.

The missions of Group/Air Station North Bend include maritime search and rescue, enforcement of laws and treaties, providing aids to navigation, and marine environmental protection.  In addition, the Air Station frequently assists Federal, state and county agencies by responding to calls for assistance with inland searches and medical evacuations of injured loggers.
