Coast Guard presents certificates of valor

SEATTLE — Capt. Suzanne Englebert, Coast Guard Captain of the Port, presented certificates of valor to Bruce Johnson and Stevie Kokita at the Des Moines, Wash., city counsel meeting Thursday.

Johnson and Kokita were recognized for their actions when they rescued the driver of a vehicle that went through a parking lot barrier and plunged into Puget Sound, Wash., at the Des Moines Marina June 28, 2008.

Johnson and Kokita immediately jumped into the water to assist and were able to rescue the driver.

Tragically, the passenger died in the accident.

The certificate of valor is awarded to those who exhibit courage in saving a life or attempting to save a life at extreme risk.
