Coast Guard responds to fishing vessel grounding near Newport, Ore.

- UPDATE -

PORTLAND, Ore – Attempts to free the grounded fishing vessel Lori Ann (ex Little Linda) near Newport, Ore., were unsuccessful Tuesday.

The 50-foot fishing vessel Lori Ann (ex Little Linda) was unable to be re-floated using the high tide and remains aground on Nye Beach.

The Lori Ann had a crew of two people and was carrying approximately 1,800 gallons of diesel fuel when it ran aground at approximately 2 a.m.

A Coast Guard search and rescue team from Station Yaquina Bay, Ore., responded and ensured that the two crew members were brought safely onshore.  There were no reports of injury.

Contractors from Northwest Fire Fighters, a commercial pollution response firm, pumped approximately 400 gallons of fuel off the Lori Ann in order to reduce the vessel’s weight in preparation for salvage operations and to reduce the pollution release potential.  The owners have worked with the Coast Guard to create a salvage plan to remove the vessel and operations are currently underway.

Clean-up contractors will remain on scene overnight to ensure that none of the remaining diesel oil is released.

An attempt to tow the vessel from the beach will commence tomorrow morning.
