Agencies respond to asphalt spill near Cascade Locks, Ore.

ASTORIA, Ore. — Coast Guard Sector Portland, in partnership with Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency responded to a tanker truck accident that occurred on I-84 east of Portland, Ore., near Cascade Locks, Ore., early Wednesday morning.

Coast Guard pollution investigators from Sector Portland confirmed approximately 3,000 gallons of hot asphalt spilled onto the roadway with a very small quantity entering McCord Creek.

It is reported that the asphalt solidified immediately upon entering the water and there is no sheen.  Preventive measures, including containment boom, have been implemented to prevent any more asphalt from entering the creek and to minimize the impact to the Columbia River.
