Coast Guard suspends search for man in water - UpdateVideo available |

SEATTLE - The Coast Guard suspended the search for a man who fell into the water near Arch Cape, Ore., Sunday. Coast Guard Group Astoria recieved a call from the Seaside, Ore., 911 dispatch center at 1:20 p.m. requesting assistance for a 25-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman who were stranded on rocks. A Coast Guard HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Astoria, Ore., was diverted and a 47-foot motor life boat crew from Coast Guard Station Tillamook Bay, Ore., was launched to the scene. Once on scene, a rescue swimmer deployed and was able to hoist the woman into the helicopter. The woman told the crew the man she was with fell into the water and disappeared. The woman was left with local emergency medical personnel. The Coast Guard and members from local fire and EMS searched for the missing man and suspended the search at approximately 5 p.m. Visibility on scene was 5 miles with light winds and 4-foot seas. The water temperature was approximately 53-degrees. The Coast Guard reminds the public that the Pacific Northwest coast shorelines are extremely dangerous during seasonal changes. Check your local weather and tide information before heading to the beach. Be aware of sneaker waves that can appear without warning, often surging high up on the beach with deadly force and are impossible to predict. |
