Westbrook native promoted to three-star admiral |

SEATTLE - Rear Adm. John P. Currier, a native of Westbrook, Maine and commander of the 13th Coast Guard District, has been promoted to the rank of Vice Admiral and assigned to become the Coast Guard Chief of Staff by the Commandant of the Coast Guard, Adm. Thad Allen, following a change of command ceremony in Seattle, Tuesday. In his new assignment, Currier will oversee all aspects of mission support including acquisition, personnel, budgeting, communication technologies, engineering and logistics for the service. Completing his tour as Commander of the 13th District based in Seattle, Currier directed and oversees all Coast Guard operations in the Pacific Northwest including Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. Currier was commissioned in 1976 upon graduation from officer candidate school and was designated as an aviator after completion of Naval Flight training in 1977. Currier previously commanded Coast Guard Air Stations Miami and Detroit. He has also been stationed at Air Stations in Cape Cod, Mass., Sitka, Alaska, Traverse City, Mich., and Astoria, Ore., and served as the deputy program manager of engineering for the Coast Guard HH-60J and Navy HH-60H helicopter acquisition at the Naval Air System Command in Washington, D.C. As an aviator Currier has flown more than 6,000 hours in Coast Guard and Navy airplanes and helicopters. He is a graduate of the Air Force Air War College in Montgomery, Ala. Among his many awards, Currier has received the Legion of Merit and the Distinguished Flying Cross along with the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Coast Guard Commendation Medal with "O" device, Coast Guard Achievement Medal with "O" device and others. Currier is a 1970 graduate of Cheverus High School in Portland, Maine. He currently holds a Masters in business from Embry-Riddle University and is a graduate of the University of Southern Maine. He served as a police office in Westbrook from 1973 to 1976. Currier is the son of William and Janet Currier of Westbrook and is married to the former Mary Jane Greenleaf of South Portland.
