Coast Guard medevacs injured man from vessel near Heceta Head

SEATTLE – The Coast Guard medevaced a man from a fish processing vessel 25 miles from Heceta Head near Florence, Ore., Friday.

Coast Guard Group Astoria, Ore., received a call from the 376-foot vessel Alaskan Ocean.  The 28-year-old man had accidentally severed his left ring finger at around 7:29 p.m.  An HH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Facility Newport, Ore., was launched to hoist the man from the boat.

The helicopter crew flew the man to the Newport Municipal Airport
where he was met by emergency medical service personnel who transported him to a nearby hospital.  No other injuries were reported.

Air Facility Newport is part of Coast Guard Group North Bend, Ore.  The air facility frequently assists federal, state and county agencies by responding to calls for assistance with inland searches and medical evacuations of injured loggers.
