Search on for man swept from Newport south jetty

SEATTLE - The Coast Guard and Newport Fire Department are searching for a 23-year-old man who was swept from a jetty in Newport, Ore., Sunday.

A 47-foot motor lifeboat crew from Coast Guard Station Yaquina Bay was escorting the motor vessel Sea Venture I into Newport harbor with a sick passenger on board at 10:42 a.m. As the ships were passing the jetty they spotted a man waving for their attention.  The man reported he and a friend had been knocked off the south jetty into the water by a wave moments earlier.  The man was able to swim to shore, but his friend was missing.

The motor lifeboat crew immediately began searching the nearby water while an HH-65 helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Facility Newport was dispatched to the scene and the Newport Fire Department was notified for assistance with the search.

Searchers have discovered a white hoodie belonging to the missing man on the shore but no other sign of him.

Weather in Newport is rainy with 10-15 knot winds and 1-12 foot seas.
