The Thirteenth Coast Guard District celebrated the 82nd annual observance of Black History Month at Sector Seattle February 20, 2008, with live music, food and poetry readings.

During Black History Month, as well as any other time of the year, Coast Guard units and commands are encouraged to take time to recognize the accomplishments and contributions that African-Americans have made to the Coast Guard, our nation and the world.

This year's theme is Carter G. Woodson and the origins of multiculturalism.  Multiculturalism is the view that various cultures in a society merit equal respect and scholarly interest. It became a significant force in American society in the 1970s and 1980s as African-Americans, Latinos, and other ethnic groups explored their own history

Dr. Woodson holds an outstanding position in early 20th century American history. Woodson authored numerous scholarly books and magazine articles on the positive contributions of African-Americans to the development of America.  Dr. Woodson reached out to schools and the general public through the establishment of several key organizations and founded Negro History Week, the precursor to Black History Month.
