Hello and happy Wednesday! Today several Coast Guard members from the Seattle area celebrated Ash Wednesday during a Catholic Mass at the Integrated Support Command at Pier 36. Lt. Jose Pimentel, the Reserve Chaplain for the Eleventh Coast Guard District and a Catholic priest serving the University of Washington in the Campus Catholic Ministry, conducted the mass. Petty Officer 3rd Class Tara Molle, a practicing Catholic, attended mass and was able to snap some photos of Coasties receiving ashes upon their foreheads.
In the Western Christian calendar, Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and occurs forty days before Easter (excluding Sundays). The priest marks the forehead of each participant with black ashes in the shape of a cross, which the worshiper traditionally retains until washing it off after sundown. Typically, people who celebrate Ash Wednesday fast and do not eat meat today.
