COAST GUARD RESPONDS TO VESSEL ON FIRE | |

SEATTLE - The Coast Guard responded to the 72-foot fishing vessel Sunway on fire with three people aboard approximately 12 miles southwest of Tillamook, Ore., about 4:32 p.m. today. Rescued were 25-year-old Peter McGuinness, from Carson City, Nev., 43-year-old Tim Carr from Bonney Lake, Wash., and 40-year-old Richard Pennewell, from Edgewood, Wash. The fire was located in the vessels engine room, bringing large amounts of smoke into the wheel house and making it impossible for the crew to safely call for mayday via channel 16 on their radio. The crew of the Sunway called for mayday via cell phone, donned their survival suits and prepared to abandon ship. Their Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon was also activated to help give the rescue crews an accurate location. Coast Guard Air Station Astoria immediately launched an HH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew to respond to the vessel, along with a 47-foot response boat crew from Station Tillamook Bay. The rescue helicopter crew hoisted all three people and transported them to Air Station Astoria. There were no injuries reported. The rescue boat crew stayed on scene to secure the area due to explosions coming from the vessel. | |
