COAST GUARD COMMENTS ON WASHINGTON STATE FERRIES'
STEEL ELECTRIC FERRY SERVICE

SEATTLE - The Coast Guard has received media inquiries into the Washington State Ferries' (WSF) recent decision to pull the steel electric ferries from service.

The WSF came to this decision after ongoing work and recent inspections performed by Coast Guard and WSF representatives revealed significant hull pitting along the keel of the QUINALT that may extend to all four steel electric ferries.

The Coast Guard is the lead federal agency responsible for ensuring that all passenger vessels (including all Washington State ferries) comply with applicable U.S. inspection laws and regulations designed to ensure the safety and security of vessels, passengers and to protect the marine environment from pollution.

In this capacity Sector Seattle will continue to work closely with representatives from the WSF system to return ferry service to the Port Townsend - Keystone route.

For additional information related to the Coast Guard's roles and responsibilities associated with the inspection of passenger ferries, please contact Sector Seattle's Joint Harbor Operations Center at (206) 217-6002.

For more information concerning the Washington State Ferries inspection program and its decision to pull the four steel electric ferries from service, please contact the WSF's Customer Information Manager at (206) 515-3460.
