U.S., CANADIAN COAST GUARDS JOIN FORCES TO RESCUE TWO
|
ASTORIA, Ore. - The Coast Guard and Canadian Coast Guard coordinated the rescue of two men from a life raft 138 miles from Cape Disappointment at 12:30 p.m. today. Coast Guard Air Station Astoria contacted Canadian Coast Guard Pacific Region in Tofino, B.C., at 10:30 a.m. after overhearing a distress report to the Canadian Coast Guard. The 52-foot Canadian fishing vessel, Silver Beau, was taking on water, and the two men were abandoning ship. An HH-60 helicopter crew from Astoria performed the rescue while a C-130 plane crew from Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento provided aerial coverage of the operation. The Coast Guard Cutter Active was also diverted to the scene. The men were transported to Astoria where they were treated for minor hypothermia and released. In addition to its life raft, the Silver Beau was equipped with a variety of safety equipment including flares, a satellite telephone, an Emergency Positon Indicating Radio Beacon, and survival suits that led to a timely rescue. The vessel's captain also kept emergency medications with him in a sealed plastic bag. The cause of the vessel's sinking is unknown at this time.
