TOW RESULTS IN FINES FOR CHARTER BOAT CAPTAIN | |
|
LA PUSH, Wash. - Seaman Charity Baran of Coast Guard Station Quillayute River signals that the 31-foot chartered fishing vessel Top Notch is tied on to Station Quillayute River's 47-foot reponse boat during a tow operation Wednesday at 2:58 p.m. The station received a call at 1:39 p.m. from the vessel's captain who reported that the Top Notch was approximately 16 miles southwest of La Push with five people on board with a damaged water pump. A 47-foot response boat crew was dispatched to perform the tow and relieve a Good Samaritan who managed to tow the Top Notch until the Coast Guard arrived. A post-operation boarding revealed the vessel was carrying expired flares and lacked signaling devices including a horn and whistle. The vessel's captain was ticketed for violations that could cost up to $7600. The Top Notch will be unable to leave port until it meets all safety requirements.
