MEDIA, PUBLIC INVITED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE COAST GUARD AUXILIARY | |

SEATTLE - The Coast Guard Auxiliary and Coast Guard invite the public and media to attend an open house and search and rescue demonstration Sept. 23 in Port Townsend, Wash. The open house will begin at 10 a.m. at the Pope Marine Building at Pier 23 with a presentation about the Coast Guard Auxiliary , followed by a search and rescue demonstration involving an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Port Angeles, Wash., and auxiliary vessels at 10:30 a.m. A demonstration of how kayaks are being used in a variety of environmental and ecological patrols is also planned for 11 a.m.At approximately noon, members will discuss other services the auxiliary provides to the community, including an aviation program that allows qualified volunteer pilots the opportunity to support Coast Guard missions. Citizens interested in joining the Coast Guard Auxiliary are encouraged to attend. The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is composed of uniformed, non-military volunteer civilians who assist the Coast Guard in all of its varied missions, except for military and direct law enforcement. These men and women can be found on the nation's waterways, in the air, in classrooms and on the dock, performing Maritime Domain Awareness patrols, safety patrols, vessel safety checks and public education. The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary was founded in 1939 by an Act of Congress as the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve and re-designated as the Auxiliary in 1941. Over 30,000 members donate millions of hours annually in support of Coast Guard missions | |
