COAST GUARD TO CLOSE ROGUE RIVER
| SEATTLE - The Coast Guard is expected to close the Rogue River seasonal search and rescue detachment in Gold Beach, Ore., Sept. 25.
The Rogue River detachment opens seasonally due to increased boating traffic during the summer months and hazardous river bar conditions. The station will reopen Memorial Day, 2007. Mariners are advised that the river entrance will not be covered by immediate emergency response. The Pacific Northwest is home to some of the roughest bars in the world. Boaters should check closure information and current bar restrictions by contacting their local Coast Guard station or visiting the 13th District's hazardous bar website at http://www.uscg.mil/d13/bar/default.htm. The Coast Guard Auxiliary will be offering free vessel safety checks at the Rogue River boat launch the weekends of September 16-17 and September 23-24 from 8 a.m. through 4 p.m. The vessel examiners are experienced boaters and are trained to know the latest boating regulations and safety equipment needs. A "Seal of Safety" will be affixed to all vessels found to be safe. If an item is outdated or missing the examiners will suggest appropriate corrections to the owner.
