News Release: Man rescued from beach near Tillamook Head Lighthouse

SEATTLE — The Coast Guard rescued an injured man from the beach at Ecola State Park, north of Tillamook Head Lighthouse, Ore., Sunday.

Coast Guard Sector Columbia River, located in Astoria, Ore., received a call at approximately 9:50 p.m., from a 911 dispatcher, who was relaying information from the Canon Beach Police Dept., concercerning an injured and stranded hiker.  An MH-60J Jayhawk helicopter crew was launched to the scene. A Coast Guard rescue swimmer was lowered to the hiker, a 42-year-old male, and assessed that he has a possible broken left leg, and was showing signs of hypothermia due to the fact he had been on the beach for nearly two hours, and was cold and thirsty.

The hiker was hoisted by the helicopter crew and taken to awaiting emergency medical services who transported him to a local hospital.

The missions of Coast Guard Sector Columbia River include maritime search and rescue, enforcement of laws and treaties, providing aids to navigation, and marine environmental protection.  In addition, the Air Stations frequently assists federal, state and county agencies by responding to calls for assistance with inland searches and medical evacuations.
