ASTORIA, Ore. — The Coast Guard rescued two men from a jetty after their vessel capsized and broke up on the Columbia River bar Friday.

The crew of the fishing vesel Elsie from Hammond, Ore., contacted Coast Guard Sector Columbia River in Warrenton, Ore., at approximately 9:57 p.m. to report their vessel had broken up on the south jetty of the Columbia River bar and they were in need of rescue.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Astoria and two 47-foot motor lifeboat crews from Station Cape Disappointment in Ilwaco, Wash., were dispatched to the scene.   The helicopter crew located the men and managed to hoist them into the helicopter.  Both men were taken to Air Station Astoria with no reported injuries.

The men reported they were ejected from the Elsie after initially contacting the Coast Guard and managed to climb onto the jetty where they used a cellphone to dial Astoria 911.  Both men were wearing survival suits, significantly protecting them from the elements and making it easier for the Coast Guard crew to spot them .

Winds on scene were at 5 knots with 8 to 12-foot seas.  Air temperature was 56 degress with a 66-degree water temperature.
